Returning To Work
Returning To Work After You Retired? Really?
COVID resulted in a lot of retirements. Some were forced on people and others just said “I’m getting outta here”. As things are getting back to something resembling pre-virus, returning to work is becoming a reality for a lot of people. Here’s a couple of statistics: Almost 40% of people over 65 who are working, were previously retired. Over 50% of current retirees say they would consider going back to work if the right opportunity dropped into their lap. (I’m part of that group but it would have to be a nearly perfect situation)
Good Reasons To Return To Work
There are good reasons for some people to return to work. Some people miss the socialization or the work. Going from the usual morning debates over last nights game or Downton Abbey episode, to long days watching the lawns getting watered, you start missing your co- workers, even pain-in-the-butt Bob.
Others really like what they did for work and weren’t ready to give it up. I recently had a colonoscopy, (I’ll spare the details). The nurse who took care of me was 73 and had returned to work after being retired for a couple of years. She missed taking care of people. She also works one 12 hour day a week and uses the money she makes to fund her global travels.
Also, due to a “hard to explain”, but real labor shortage, employers are desperate and offering jobs with nice benefits like super flexible hours, work from home, and cash bonuses to join their teams.
Not So Good Reasons To Return To Work
Some people have to return to work because of financial reasons, like friggin’ inflation, the damage to their retirement savings due to the stock market chaos, and the supposed, upcoming recession. It’s easy to be concerned about your financial health theses days. Taking a part-time job to cover grocery expenses could make a lot of sense.
Going back to work is not for everyone but if you’re considering it, you won’t be alone. Here’s an article that has data that might surprise you:

PS: If you’re planning on going back to work, you need to be aware of the financial impact with Social Security income limits, tax impact on those benefits, and the affect it may have on Medicare. You may want to talk with a financial advisor before plunging into unretirement. This article helps summarize those issues :

Amazon Clamping Down On Fake Reviews
Amazon is loaded with fake reviews. A lot of sellers on Amazon pay to have reviews written for their products. It helps to look for “Verified Purchase” next to a review, but there is still a lot of bad 5 star ratings. Amazon is getting serious about these fake reviews, especially when sellers are paying people to create them. This article lays out Amazons recent effort to deal with the issue. BTW I stand by my review of the OXO Ice Cream scoop.

Working The High Seas - What A Job!
There’s a world on the seas I was barely aware of, Merchant Marines. These people travel the world to deliver us goods, fuel, grain, and lay underwater cables. They are out to sea sometimes for over 100 days. They have fun but also boredom and real danger. Joe Franta is a merchant marine who has a YouTube channel where he shares his experiences. These videos get “5 Bouges”, very highly recommended. Please watch:
